The William and Mary Cape Town Summer Study Abroad Program is unique among the College’s offerings in that it is the only service-learning program available to our students. Conceived in 2007 as a collaboration between the Shawco program of the University of Cape Town and the College of William and Mary, the program was first offered to our students in 2008 and has run every year since.

Since its inception the program has allowed students to earn college credit for program-specific courses offered at the University of Cape Town while participating in hands-on service learning with k12 students in one of Shawco’s educational units in a local township. The program is lead every year by a William and Mary faculty member, who also teaches a course in Cape Town which focus on specific issues in South Africa that relates to that faculty member’s discipline. Additionally, 2013 marked the first time that our students were asked to produce their own research on a self-selected topic while in Cape Town and share their work here at Mapping WM.
